BUDWEIS GALLERY

A design of a gallery conceived as an open urban courtyard. A high wall shelters semi-open spaces with trees, a water surface and a café, while the exhibition halls alternate between intimacy, openness and natural light.

Somewhere between a city and a gallery. The project aimed to maintain a distinctly urban character, which is why most of the designed space opens semi-publicly toward the street. On the site, I defined the perimeter with a tall wall that encloses semi-open yet fully permeable courtyards. These spaces could serve both the gallery and the city.

The result is a seemingly enclosed environment with seating areas, trees, and shallow walkable water surface. Here is also the entrance to the gallery and its café. Inside, the gallery plays with the principles of shifting volumes. Enclosed exhibition rooms alternate with open, airy display spaces filled with natural light, entering through the courtyards.
